African Carbon Trust

The African Carbon Trust (ACT) is a stand-alone, registered non-profit organisation that aims to address the need for Africa to mitigate and adapt to the risks of climate change and unsustainable resource use. We intend to do this by leveraging technology as a driver of human behaviour change that will result in the following: - innovative energy technology development - increased diversity of clean energy mix - lowering emissions - community development - green enterprise development We create innovative adaptation and mitigation projects and initiatives that turn the risks of climate change into opportunities for social, economic and environmental development. All our projects are designed to benefit the people who are most vulnerable to the risks of climate change – the low-income earner. ACT answers the need for an African platform that will facilitate and motivate all Africans to join forces in managing the continent’s footprint and mitigating the risks of climate change while at the same time stimulating sustainable growth. BACKGROUND ACT was initiated by Interactive Africa, the innovative marketing entrepreneurs behind the HIP2B2 campaign and the award winning event - Design Indaba. Its founding partners are marketing partner Interactive African, Bowman Gilfillan as legal partner and KPMG as technical advisors. Through the process of offsetting the carbon footprint of the Design Indaba, Interactive Africa recognised the great opportunity that South Africa has to accelerate social and economic development through the revolutionary use of renewable energy, low-carbon solutions and innovative technology. ACT was founded by Interactive Africa in response to the need for climate change information and progressive action on this critical issue in Africa.
