Salida Conversions
Description
EMIS – Plug in hybrid electric assist.
Salida Conversions is a certified dealer for Netgain Technologies, LLC. We are their only Colorado dealer of the new product EMIS which is the Engine Motor Interface System. This cutting edge technology created by George Hamstra and company was funded by NASA and has been in development for over 4 years.
EMIS is not only profitable through sales, but profit can be made through fabrication and installation. Installation is relatively simple and can take under 8 hours with 3 people and the proper tools and skills.
The installation requires us to frame mount a 200lb series wound DC electric motor (TranswarP) in line with the drive shaft. The old driveshaft is removed and returned to the vehicle owner, while a new shaft is fabricated only shorter, to include the TranswarP. The TranswarP is then connected to the transfer case using a yoke and universal joint. The other end of the motor is connected to the new driveshaft that connects back to the differential on the rear axle. We also install a minimum of a 48 volt battery and motor
control pack. We fabricate the pack and battery box based on the space available and the customer’s preference.
The system is quite simple. Every vehicle 1996 – 2008 have an OBD2 (On Board Diagnostics) outlet in the vehicle that is required for all automakers. This allows technicians to read any warnings and info stored in the vehicles computer. EMIS plugs into the OBD2 and reads the live information projected by the vehicle while it is running. EMIS is also wired into the brake and reverse lights as well as a temperature sensor in the TranswarP electric motor.
EMIS is programmable by the TIM (Technicians Interface Module). This is solely for certified EMIS programmers. The module plugs into the EMIS unit and enables the technician to program when and where the TranswarP assists the vehicle’s engine.
The tech can have the TranswarP turn on using throttle position and low speed start. The tech can also control how much power the motor initially uses based on driving habits, vehicle size, weight, and load. Other programmable aspects of EMIS are time of day, login (to record an analyze MPG data), high speed motor cutoff, and high temp stop.
When installed and programmed properly, this is how EMIS functions:
The vehicle is first started and moving, EMIS reads the throttle position and speed from the OBD2 live data. Once the programmed speed and throttle position are reached, the EMIS sends a message to the motor controller to turn the TranswarP motor on and assist the vehicle’s ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) The TranswarP adds 132 ft lbs of torque while spinning counter clockwise to reduce engine stress and help push the vehicle through startup. Initial startup and low MPH are the times when a vehicle is least fuel efficient and creates the most emissions. With the assistance of the TranswarP, this problem is reduced. Once the vehicle accelerates to the programmed shutoff point, which is usually programmed at 45 mph the TranswarP shuts off and will turn on again when the vehicle decelerates to below 45 mph. The driver plugs the vehicle in at night to recharge the batteries.
EMIS possesses many safety features:
When the driver releases the gas pedal (throttle position), backs up, or applies the brakes, EMIS shuts down the TranswarP. If the TranswarP, or EMIS becomes too hot, EMIS will shut down the TranswarP. When the battery voltage becomes too much or too little, EMIS will shut it down. Finally, If the amperage reaches any critical point, EMIS will shut the TranswarP down.
The end result is an average mpg increase of 30%, reduced emissions, and an increase in overall vehicle power that reduces engine stress and extends the life of valuable vehicle components. Another impressive end result is the way the vehicle operates. It is quieter and feels more powerful, without jumping low gears or revving up.
