f: food & fashion: happygreenbee: Buzzworthy Organic Kid’s Clothes

November 21st, 2008. Written By Connie Wu.

Stylish organic tees aren’t just for eco-conscious Angeleno adults - it’s easy for kids to look cute and dress green too!

Organic children’s clothing line happygreenbee, designed by natural personal care products company Burt’s Bees founder (we’re sensing a theme here) Roxanne Quimby, offers fun, colorful bee-striped designs for infants and toddlers.

The line has soft, stretchy infant and toddler clothing and accessories including dresses, jeans, cardigans, leggings, baby blankets and dolls.

We’re fans of the adorable happygreenbee striped chemise ($32) and the striped skort ($30), which come in a variety of bright color combinations like watermelon pink and sky blue.

.

Best of all, happygreenbee clothing is made with organic cotton, which is free of exposure to pesticides or toxic residues that can be harmful to sensitive children’s skin - and that’s something we can all “bee” happy about!

w: wellness & beauty: Healthy Holiday Cookware

November 19th, 2008. Written By Danielle Davis.

As weather gets cooler, kitchens heat up.  And with holiday gatherings approaching, even those of us who normally only use that room in the house for displaying bowls of fruit get in on the action.

As you prepare to fire up the oven, we rounded up a list of three of our favorite cooking tools. Here goes:

Safety: Lodge Cast Iron pots and pans have been around for over a hundred years. And not just the company–its products easily last that long as well. Though they take a little extra care, its skillets are free of any dangerous metals and contribute only good things, like the nutrient iron—especially beneficial for women—to meals. Lodge is even doing plenty for the planet at its headquarters. This ydt staffer has one and loves it.

.

..

Efficiency: The Fagor Pressure Cooker is the real deal in efficient cooking.  This stainless steel contraption is nothing like the one my mother remembers for blowing up all over her stove.  The new generation is sleek and easy to use and cuts down on cooking time by up to 70%. You can simmer almost anything in it, but it’s especially suited for beans and whole grains which can take two hours to cook in a regular pot.  (And not only are those whole foods nonperishable and super-healthy, they’re also some of the most economical foods around, especially when bought at your local bulk bin. You can get a Fagor at Amazon here.

.

Healthy Storage: We all know plastic is so over. Storing lunches and leftovers in certain plastic containers leaches chemicals that could cause hormone disruption or cancer into your food and into you.  Plus, plastic is a petroleum product. To avoid such red flags, glass is one safe way to go.  These storage containers just say no to plastic in favor of healthy, recyclable, microwavable, dishwasher-safe glass.

You can read up on what kinds of cookware to avoid at eartheasy. To green cooking and good spirits this holiday season!

t: green living: Raw Pumpkin Pie: Our Version of the Holiday Favorite Gives Pumpkin the Raw Deal

November 18th, 2008. Written By Your Daily Thread Team.

All those Novembers ago… when the Pilgrims scraped together their first pumpkin pies… they were thankful just to have survived.  But survival is so East Coast (just ask your favorite investment banker).

The West Coast is all about thriving, so we do it raw, we do it juicy. And we do it super.
Our holiday pumpkin pie is packed with carroty goodness - in fact, no pumpkins were harmed in the making. This baby gets its orange glow from a healthy infusion of carrot juice. Sorry pumpkin - maybe next year!

It’s all about raw, living food, and loaded with stimulating superfoods that tantalize the metabolism as well as the palate, including maca and mesquite. For added savor we use flower-of-the-ocean sea salt, spice it up with cinnamon and sweeten it with blue agave nectar (easy on the blood sugar). And for that wonderful creaminess (”Like-a-buttah”, as my Italian in-laws might have said), we use those tropical treats: lucuma, soaked cashews and coconut oil (for slippy-flowing blood) and non-GMO lecithin (for clearing cholesterol-clogged arteries).  If this is starting to sound more like a test-tube concoction than a culinary delight - trust us. By the time we’re finished with it, this bevy of ingredients will dance across your tongue like Fred and Ginger (no, not that kind of ginger).

Can we top that? But of course - with a glaze of cranberry, raspberry, chia seeds and agave - a tangy yin to the pie’s sweet yang.  And we do it all without dairy, without wheat or gluten, and totally without refined sugars! Your guests will be begging for to-go boxes.  So, put away that can opener, shut off the oven - and seize the pie!

Order yours now for pickup any time after Wednesday - or ask nicely and we’ll drop it off directly (for a little extra, depending on location). Keeps in the fridge for a week; it’s also freezer-friendly to dine anytime.

You can order on line Here (for $75) or contact September directly at September@rawkstarfood.com

m: active lifestyle: Hot, Sweaty Yoga: bikram yoga silverlake

November 17th, 2008. Written By Anna Quint.

Even if you have mastered your “Flying Crow” yoga pose, L.A. offers an abundance of new studios and practices. Whether you are an avid yogi or simply considering attending a session, Bikram Yoga Silverlake adds a new dimension to the meditative workout: intense heat.

The studio offers several daily 90 minute classes designed for all ages and levels. A class consists of 26 postures, or asanas, and two breathing exercises, or pranayamas. If your main goal is to leave yoga feeling at ease, enlightened or free of some calories, the heat will bring further benefits by warming and loosening your muscles and flushing out toxins.

Bikram Choudhury, the founder of Bikram Yoga, believed that combining Eastern discipline with Western medicine creates a restorative, regenerative practice. Bikram began practicing yoga at the age of three and in 1973, brought his practice to the United States at the invitation of President Nixon. Bikram has been at the forefront of the yoga movement in the West, and  Bikram Yoga Silverlake now offers eastsiders a sanctifying, pleasant studio to partake in the yoga revolution.
