with
John Barker

John Barker lived in Southeast Asia for many years, where he nurtured a passion for the fine and laborious textile arts traditions. Over time, John saw these traditions fade, and the knowledge of how to create them pass away with the older generations. He has been a collector and dealer of antique textile arts now for 33 years, helping to place exquisite works with museums and responsible collectors. This effort ensures that future generations will know the extent of fine detail and skill we as humans are capable of creating with yarns, fibers, dyes, needles, and looms.

John will bring a wide range of works in many media, techniques, and aesthetic styles from the holdings he has accumulated for decades. His focus for Silk Moon's trunk show will be samples of fine older works and affordable, visually striking pieces for gift-giving or for keeping. Works will be presented from both tribal and classical weaving traditions of Southeast Asia and Southwest China: Miao, Yao, T"ai, and other minorities as well as Dayak, Lao, and Javanese.

Time: Saturday and Sunday, October 18-19, 11 am - 5 pm
John will be giving a talk at 1:00 pm both days.

A highly skilled weaving student at Taykeo Gallery, Vientiane, Laos
We all share hopes for a peaceful planet.

Silk Moon Gallery hopes to contribute in some small way to weaving a web of peace by focusing attention on human commonalities that we share across cultures: a deep-rooted fascination with fine craftsmanship and the need for and love of adornment for our homes and bodies.

We seek to foster empathy and understanding between cultures by exploring, educating, and celebrating ethnic arts and crafts traditions from developing countries.

Silk Moon is building a web of support between fair-minded shoppers in the developed world and highly skilled, hard-working artisans in developing countries.

In our fifth year of operation, we are highlighting the fine quality textiles produced by weavers and artisans we have met and worked with in Laos, Thailand, and Bali.

At Silk Moon Gallery, you will find a dazzling array of handwoven silk and cotton textiles for fashion and home decor:

* Luscious, sensuous silk scarves in more colors than you ever dreamed possible, ranging in price from $10 to collectors' quality;

* Shawls--choose from diaphanous, sexy, slinky silks, or wrap yourself in cozy, reassuring, natural-dyed cottons;

* Stunning table runners, comforting throws, elegant pillow covers, and dramatic wall-hangings, both contemporary and traditional;

Silk Moon textiles meet the full range of fashion accessory needs and desires, from a simple silk scarf that adds a touch of class to your trip to the grocery store, to intricate handwoven wearable art for a night at the opera.

Silk Moon home decor textiles range from culturally complex weavings with stories of their own to tell, to highly abstracted or understated and elegant accents for the sophisticated home.
