G20 Meeting: A Lost Opportunity
It was a modest improvement to broaden economic crisis consultation from the G8 to the G20, and to call for greater voice and representation for emerging, developing, and poor economies. Nevertheless, the push to reach fundamental agreement by the end of 2008 on the Doha WTO talks was a significant disappointment, as was the call for continued emphasis upon free market mechanisms and trade liberalization. Say NO to Larry Summers for Treasury Secretary!
On the campaign trail, President-elect Obama rightly spoke about the perils of deregulation and trade agreements that have led to our current economic crisis, and do not include worker and environmental protections.
