The company has one of the best calculators around because it takes into account a flight’s average mileage, passenger capacity, latitude, holding pattern and every other little variant. The result is an accurate number you can offset by donating to different projects around the world – building solar collectors in Africa, collecting biogas from sewage water in Thailand. It’s kind of like getting Mother Earth a big ol’ apology gift. Whether that gift will ultimately turn out to be a diamond or coal is still up for debate (and the best alternative remains to not fly) but you try telling Gramps you're not visiting this year.
