November 21: Undoing Bush’s Environmental Legacy

    EarthTalkTM
From the Editors of E/The Environmental Magazine

Dear EarthTalk: How can the new Obama administration and/or Congress undo the many anti-environmental actions the Bush administration undertook over the last eight years, including the obstruction of Bill Clinton’s landmark “roadless rule” legislation?     – Ann Lyman, Lake Tahoe, CA

The Bush administration has certainly been no friend to the environment. Besides working for eight years to overturn the Clinton administration’s “Roadless Rule” that prevented road building (and the logging that usually follows) on 58.5 million acres of national forests, the Bush White House has opened up 45 million additional acres of public land across the American West to oil and gas drilling during its tenure.  (more…)

November 19: In Hot Water: Global Warming Takes a Toll on Coral Reefs

In the summer of 2005, while Atlantic hurricanes battered coastlines from Cuba to Mexico, the Eastern Caribbean baked under a relentless sun with barely a breeze to cool the air. Tourists and locals alike wilted in the heat, and below the sea, marine life and corals in particular suffered as well. The windless calm settled in just as a buildup of unusually warm water began accumulating in the region. Ordinarily, easterly trade winds would have churned the sea, helping it to cool. But thanks to an unprecedented heat wave beginning in May—the result of a confluence of factors related to climate change, scientists say—water temperatures in the Eastern Caribbean climbed and stayed high for months, reaching levels that by September would be warmer than any recorded in 150 years. I couldn’t.  So here I am.

    November 14: What Are Eco-Villages?

    EarthTalkTM

From the Editors of E/The Environmental Magazine

Dear EarthTalk: What are “eco-villages?” I’ve heard of one in New York near Ithaca and another one called Arcosanti being built in Arizona.                               – Jim Killian, Brookline, MA

Eco-villages are essentially designed communities intending to be socially, economically and ecologically sustainable. Environmentalist Joan Bokaer developed the vision for the first eco-village, which would eventually be built on the outskirts of Ithaca, New York, while on a continent-wide walk for sustainability across the United States in 1990. In Context magazine publisher Robert Gilman helped refine the concept through his research, writing and speaking on the topic. In 1996, the first residents moved into the EcoVillage at Ithaca, and a movement was born. According to the nonprofit Global Ecovillage Network, some 420 eco-villages exist in both urban and rural settings around the world today. (more…)

November 6: Let’s help Obama with the environment

Wow, it is November 6th and Barack Obama is our President Elect. Congratulations to all of us for electing him.

Obama has promised to tackle the gigantic environmental problems of our time which include both energy independence and climate change. He has said that he can create jobs by investing in “clean energy”. He has said he can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050.  He says he can eliminate our current imports of oil from the Middle East and Venezuela with in 10 years

I think Obama will do a good job at tackling these issues and in meeting his environmental goals. I have a few concerns.  I hope he can be careful about “clean coal’ since there is no such thing and corn ethanol can be seriously argued to do more harm than good. (more…)
