Rotorua is the home of New Zealand's first sustainable tourism charter. Back in 1997 Rotorua tourism operators indicated their interest in working towards improved sustainability. Today the Rotorua Sustainable Tourism Charter has more than 50 members and is estimated to represent 80% of the Rotorua's visitor activity. Visitors to Charter businesses can be confident those businesses have committed to adopting sustainable business practices.
