Rotorua Sustainable Tourism Charter, The Rotorua Sustainable Tourism Charter is a grass roots initiative. It is being developed and operated by the local tourism industry, and designed to create startegies that protect the natural and physical environment..

Rotorua became the birthplace of tourism in New Zealand back in the 1840s when visitors came from around the world to marvel at the Pink and White Terraces.  Unfortunately those magnificent silica terraces were destroyed during the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera, however tourism in Rotorua continued to prosper on the other attractions of the area such as geothermal valleys, Maori culture, lakes, forests and today also features a number of built attractions and activities.

Rotorua continued to be a leader in tourism development and today has championed a move towards sustainable tourism.  In 2001 Rotorua became the first region in New Zealand to form a Sustainable Tourism Charter group and since then a similar model has been adopted in 13 other regions of New Zealand.  In the Rotorua region most of the larger tourism businesses and many small to medium sized tourism businesses are Charter members.
